YEARLING SALES

Top Price Of 2000gns. At

Trentham

(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 14

The top price of 2000 guineas was paid by Mr Ken Austin, acting o>i behalf of Mr J. Coleman. Melbourne for a brown colt by Foxbridge from Administration at the eighteenth national sale of thoroughbred yearlings at Trentham to-day. The colt was bred by Mr A. H. Storey at To Awamutu and is a half-brother to the Auckland Cup winner, Lord Chancellor.

The prices throughout were high for the best bred lots. Eighty-two lots were sold for an aggregate realisation of 39,015 guineas, an average of 475 guineas. The previous best average was 415 guineas in 1930, when 50 lots were sold and the highest price was 2400 guineas. An indication of the outstanding success of to-day’s sale was that last year 157 lots were sold in two days for a total realisation of 39,592 guineas, an average of 252 guineas, with the top price of 1400 guineas. For the first time on record 12 lots were sold above 1000 guineas. They were four colts by Foxbridge, three by Coronach, three by Robin Goodfellow, and two by Battle Song. The second best prices were 1600 guineas obtained for a colt by Robin Goodfellow from Sunny Maid bred by J. M. Paul, Hastings, and bought by Mr J. R. McKenzie. Christchurch, and a colt by Foxbridge from Ann Acre, bred by the Trelawney Stud, Cambridge, bought by Mr J. L Cheesman, Wellington, who races the full sister, Bridge Acre. Mr A. J Court, Auckland, owner of Lord Chancellor, gave 1500 guineas for a colt by Robin Goodfellow from Falcon, bred by Mr E. E. Steele, Windsor Park, Oamaru.

The most successful vendor was the Trelawney Stud, which sold 10 lots for a total of 7975 guineas, six colts averaging 927 guineas and four fillies 600 guineas. All, with the exception of an 1100 guineas colt by Robin Goodfellow, were sired by the Dominion’s leading stallion, Foxbridge. Overseas interests were not as well represented as usual, the bulk of the offering going to Dominion owners. Two lots were purchased on behalf of Mr A. Higgins, India, two Battle Song colts, one at 1200 guineas, and the other at 700 guineas.

In addition to the top priced colt going to Melbourne, Australian owners bought only two lots. From the offering of five yearlings by Royal Chief, which averaged 251 guineas, the best price was 425 guineas paid by W. Bryce, Trentham, for a chestnut filly out of Fiarwood. Two yearlings by Beau Repaire averaged 195 guineas, the best price being 260 guineas paid by E. Pope, Takanini, for a bay colt from Battle Flag. Defaulter’s two representatives averaged 4621 guineas, F. Dwyer, Wellington, paying 625 guineas for a chestnut colt, from Homedale. Additional sales of 600 guineas and over were:—
