INDUSTRIAL REST PERIOD
Amendment To Regulations
POSITION OF WATERSIDE WORKERS (N.Z.P.A.I WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. An amendment. to the Industrial Rest Period Emergency Regulations 1943, as they affect watersiders, was gazetted to-night, as it was found that the original regulations did not operate equitably in respect to the waterside workers, owing to the special conditions under which the work is carried on, and to the casual nature of the work so far as many watersiders are concerned. /
The amended regulations were passed on December 24, 1943, and gazetted to-night, giving the Waterfront Control Commission power to determine which waterside workers were to benefit under the regulations. The basis of the qualification is to be in regular employment, or in regular attendance for employment on the waterfront, during the period of three months ended December 21, 1943, that date coinciding with the end of the waterfront pay week. The commission has also been given power to determine in each case the basis of payment for the five days rest period, with the proviso that no workershould receive more than 40 hours’ pay at the ordinary general cargo rate.
