RECIPROCAL AID

Australian Figures (Rec. 8 pan.) SYDNEY, Jan. 12. Australia supplied 8,000,000 articles of clothing and nearly 150,000 tons of food to the United States forces up to Auguust 31 last. This has been announced by the Minister of Supply (Mr J. A. Beasley), who said that the cost to Australia of reciprocal aid to the. American forces based on Commonwealth territory might this year exceed the Budget estimate of £100,000,000. The expenditure under this head would approximate 17 per cent of Australia’s total war expenditure for the year. Mr Beasley said that the food supplied by Australia in the period under review included more than 30,000 tons of meat, 28,000 tons of canned goods, 25,000 tons of fruit and vegetables, 23.000 tons of bread, biscuits and cereals, 15,000 tons of potatoes, 6000 tons of sugar, 4000 tons of butter, 20,000,000 dozen eggs and 12,000,000 pints of milk.
