Grass Fire

Within one week to the day of a similar outbreak, the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out shortly after 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon to deal with a grass fire which had ignited a dividing macrocarpa hedge. The fire broke out among dry grass in a section on the corner of Manse and Rhodes Streets and had obtained a hold in the live fence on Mr T. Baxter’s property. Strong water pressure enabled one lead of hose to c °pe with the outbreak without any difficulty: A call to a blaze of a similar nature a week ago was occasioned when a rubbish fire became out of control and threatened adjacent fences and sheds. These outbreaks emphasised the necessity for the exercise of additional care when burning rubbish to ensure against the spread of the flames in the dry conditions now prevailing.
