Farewell Gathering

Tributes to two of the most efficient officers the Waimate Corps has had for the loyal and devoted service given, were paid to Adjutant S. A. Smith and Mrs Smith in the Salvation Army Barracks, when friends and wellwishers assembled to bld them farewell and to wish them success in their new s-phere. Acting Sergeant-Major W. Duckett presided. Opportunity was taken to extend congratulations to Miss Amy Kirk, who is leaving to enter the officers’ training establishment at Wellington, Introduced as “the faithful friend of the Army,” Mr George Dash paid tribute to Adjutant and Mrs Smith for the work done in Waimate both for the Corps and In other organisations. The Rev. A. H. Acheson, for the Ministers’ Association, spoke of the valued friendship and the loyal and happy co-operation of Adjutant Smith with the Ministers’ Association. Much good work could be accomplished among the ranks of the young, and it was among the young people that Adjutant and Mrs Smith and Candidate Amy Kirk would find great fields for work.

Others who paid tributes to Adjutant and Mrs Smith and extended congratulations to Miss Kirk were Mrs W. Duckett, who spoke for the Home League and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She especially thanked Mrs Smith for her work; Recruiting Sergeant T. Hoare, Sister A. Mills (Corps secretary), the Rev. C. L. Gosling and Acting SergeantMajor Duckett.

Adjutant and Mrs Smith suitably acknowledged the tributes. Concert items were •ontributed during the evening by the Songsters and Mrs T. Phillips and Miss J. Phillips. Popular Army choruses were sung. Miss B. Phillips was accompanist at the piano, and Mrs T. Phillips at the organ.
