Woman Appointed RUGBY, January 10. Tire appointment of the Hon. Mrs Stewart-Mackenzie as assistant to the Commercial Secretary at the British Embassy in Moscow marks the third occasion when Britain has appointed a woman diplomat. Mrs Stewart-Mackenzie, who is 31. has worked at the Ministry of Economic Warfare, but she recently transferred to Cabinet offices. She is a B.Sc. (Economics) of London University and before the war she did literary research work. Lately she has been learning Russian. Her husband, Major the Hon. Francis Stewart-Mackenzie, was killed three months ago. Her brother, Lord Lyell, who was killed earlier in 1943, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. The two other women who have been given diplomatic status are Miss Mary Craig McGeachy, of the staff of the Public Relations Department, and Mrs Betty Gibbs, an attache. Both are in Washington.
