FREEZING WORKS

Killing And Manpower Problem APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. At a conference held to-day between the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) and the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, killings and the manpower position at the freezing works were discussed. The main discussion was centred on the present serious position existing owing to the prevailing dry weather, rendering immediately necessary the provision of increased manpower to fully staff the various works. It was agreed that the problem was an urgent one, especially because of the pressing need to increase the quantity of meat for Britain, and it was emphasised that fat lambs, if not killed when ready, might go back into the non-exportable class. Mr Sullivan said the Government realised the need for immediate action, and definite steps would be taken to meet the position.
