While there still remains an acute housing shortage in Timaru, the statistics of building permits issued by the Timaru Borough Council show that there were considerably more houses built in 1943 than during the previous year. In 1943. there were 13 houses built in Timaru while in 1942 there were only two. In 1941. 32 homes were built. A total number of 118 permits to the value of £36,624/10/- was issued in 1943. compared with 47 permits to the value of £22,909 in 1942. In December. 1943. 14 permits were issued to the value of £2344. while for December, 1942, five permits were issued to the value of £228. One of the largest building projects in 1943 was the additions to the South Canterbury Hospital Board isolation block at a cost of £7290. In 1942 the building of the Otipua Hospital absorbed £5200, and additions to Craighead School cost £1430.
