CORNFLOUR MILL DESTROYED
New Plant Recently Installed (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 25. Fire gutted the factory of Provita Mills, Ltd., Ferry Road. Christchurcn, early this afternoon. Stocks and machinery valued at between £BOOO and £9OOO were destroyed, and only the brick walls of the building remain. The factory was carrying abnormally large stocks, including a consignment of cornflour for the North Island. Production had only recently been commenced with a new American system for producing cornflour, which was expected to treble the factory’s output. Special temperature recording instruments and other valuable Continental and American machinery were also a total loss. The fire started in the drying duct in the cornflour plant and. fanned by a strong south-west wind, soon gained a good hold on the building. The insurances on the stock and machinery are not expected to cover the loss.
