RED CROSS SOCIETY
WEST END SUB-CENTRE At a recent meeting of the West End sub-centre of the Red Cross a report of the activities of the branch since its inauguration in September of last year was read.
The jumble sale held on April 2 realised a gross profit of £43 and this was considered gratifying. A donation of £3O was voted to the centre executive. It was decided to give to the next-of-kin of all prisoners of war (of whom there are now 20 in the West End area) postal notes to the value of 4/- to enable them to send lib of chocolate in their next parcels. The president reported on the hospital visiting and said that fruit for the soldier patients was now being supplied by the members of the branch and not from the centre executive funds as was the custom. This method had proved successful and many patients had been supplied since the method was adopted. Votes of thanks were passed to the St. John Ambulance Association for the loan of tables and seats for the jumble sale, to Mrs Jack for the loan of her sewing machine for the sewing circle, and to Mr Romans for auditing the accounts.
WASHDYKE SUB-CENTRE The annual meeting of the Washdyke sub-centre of the Red Cross was presided over by Mrs W. T. Kellehan. The report and balance-sheet, which were adopted, showed a very successful year. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs W. T. Kellehan; secretary, Miss M. G. Ballantyne; committee, Mesdames Davidson, Dawes, Fields, Harris, James and King. The committee dispatched during the year to the centre several pullovers, pairs of socks, mittens and balaclavas. A letter was received from headquarters asking how many members would give hospitality to convalescent members of the United States Forces. It was left to the committee to make inquiries.
