RAM FAIRS

Sales In The Ring

New Method Commended

“I am pleased to say that the balance-sheet shows a profit of

£156 13. 7, and this is arrived at after making an allowance of £ll4/0/3 for depreciation,” said Mr R. Maddren, retiring president of the Timaru A. and P. Association, at. the adjourned

annual meeting yesterday. “Since the adjournment of the annual meeting,” said Mr Maddren. “the ram fairs have been held and the new method of selling in the ring has been tried out. I am particularly gratified in being able to say that the fairs have been very successful. Several vendors and buyers came to me and expressed their appreciaton of the manner in which the sale was conducted. They also said it was a very great improvement on the old method of selling in the pens and hoped we would continue with the new method and hold the two days sales. The auctioneers. without exception, stated that it was the easiest selling and the earliest finished than any previous fairs they have ever had.” Mr Maddren mentioned that during the year a floor had been put in the kennel club shed at the showgrounds, the produce shed and the dining rooms, the kennel club floor costing £l5O. General repairs by painting the tea rooms and small repairs about the buildings were also carried out. “I would like to mention that the farmers have responded magnificently to the request of the Government for increased production.” Mr Maddren concluded. I wish to thank all members for their co-operation and consideration extended to me at all times. Officers Elected

The following officers were elected: Patroness, Mrs T. Teschemaker; patrons, Messrs W. J. Bassett and T. R. Rhodes; president, Mr G. G. Rich; vice-president. Mr E. Hart; hon. treasurer, Mr T. Seaton; auditor, Mr A. C. Martin; secretary, Mr H. H. Fraser; committee, Messrs J. E. Bennett, J. E. P. Cameron, J. Crawford, Wm. Divan, A. S. Elworthy, H. Elworthy, W. A. Fleming, D. Grant, R. Talbot, Dr. P. R. Woodhouse. Mr W. H. Orbell said the Association should make some improvement in the method of selling at ram fairs. The method of drawing for places was not the best way. “We have got a great improvement in the ring selling,” said Mr Orbell, “but there is still room for improvement. Mr Orbell moved that the Sheep Committee go into the question of altering the method of selling rams and to make a report to the next general committee. The motion was carried.

So as not to clash with ewe fairs it was decided that future annual meetings be held during April. The Association agreed to endorse the 14 points issued by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in support of the establishment of a seedtesting station in Timaru.
