COMMERCIAL ADDINGTON MARKET

KEEN DEMAND FOR STORE LAMBS (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 27. A large entry of store lambs from North Canterbury, South Canterbury, Marlborough and North Otago met with a good sale at Addington to-day. Best lambs sold up to last week's rates and medium and Inferior advanced by 1 - a head. Last week's drop of 25 - a head in steer beef was recovered and there was also a rise in prices of cow and heifer beef. Fat wethers showed little change, but over fat and unfinished ewes were not in demand. Store Lambs: With the highest varding of the season. 12.580 against 10.000 last week, store lambs from Marlborough to Otago were offered to keen competition. Best lambs sold at a par with last week's rates. Medium and inferior grades showed a rise of 1/-, with cull lambs especially sought after. Best lambs made from 22 1 to 23/10. others 18/1 to 21/1, medium 16 10 to 17/10, inferior 14/6 to 16 6. culls 9 6 to 11/6. Store Sheep: One pen of four, six and eight-tooth ewes sold from 21/7 to 22 9. older sheep 13/6 to 15/3, culls 5/6 t.o 6/3. The majority of the wethers offered were four and six-tooth hill country sheep. One line brought up to 20 10. Best price for two-tooths was 24/4, others 21/- to 22/9, older sheep 15/- to 16/5. Fat Cattle: Rising from 470 last week to 500, the fat cattle entry included several pens of extra good quality steers for which there was a good demand by the trade. The market was exceptionally firm from the outset and a drop of 25/- a head last week was fully recovered for the best steer beef. There was little change in other lines. Best beef made 44/- to 46/- per 1001 b, good average 40/- to 42/6, medium 39/6, secondary 37/-. Cow beef made down to 28/- per 1001 b. Fat pigs met a good demand on a short market. In the early part of the sale prices were up by 6/- a head, but with late arrivals last week's rates returned. Choppers were in medium supply, but there was a large bacon entry. Pork averaged 8d to 9d per lb, bacon 7d to Bd. Fat Sheep: There was a slight Increase on last week’s entry of 4000 fat sheep. The quality was good, with a larger proportion of wethers than recently with keen demand for best quality, but there appeared to be a limit to butchers’ activities at about schedule prices. Ewes met a good sale, but over-conditioned and lightconditioned sheep were not in request. Freezing buyers operated only for lighter ewes. Prime heavy wethers brought 35/to 37/-, tops 40/-, medium 32/- to 34/-, light from 24/-; prime evzes to 27/-, prime medium 20/- to 23/-, ordinary down to 10/-.
