£20 PENALTY
Bookmaker Fined
Pleading guilty to the charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Timaru, on January 9. Frank Richard Henshaw, who appeared before Mr H. Morgan, S.M., at the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday, was fined £2O, and 10/- costs. Detective-Sergeant E. M. Thomas said that Detective W. Cunningham had seen Henshaw writing in a book. When questioned by the detective, accused admitted he was taking bets. Accused who was 42 years of age, was a married man with two children. He had not been before the Court previously. The book he was carrying showed that the amount he had taken in bets was over £6O. The accused stated that he was carrying on the business for a friend during the period he was in hospital. The Magistrate: You must have known the risks you were running when you were carrying on this business? You are convicted and fined £2O and 10/- costs. The accused: I would like time to pay it. The Magistrate: What time are you asking for? The accused: I would like three months. I have no money to pay. The Magistrate then ordered that accused pay £lO by February 1 and the following £lO/10/- by March 1.
