dates fixed When the president of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre (Mr H. H. Fraser) asked a meeting of the executive last evening if they were in favour of continuing the harbour events this year, there was a loud and unanimous replv of "Certainly!” It was decided to hold the Speechlev mile on the afternoon of February 20, the half-mile on the evening of 'February 8. and the 440 yards on the evening of January 25. The usual trophies will be awarded. "This is one of the sports to which the public arc not charged for admittance,’’ commented the chairman. The following were elected a subcommittee to arrange for collection boxes, Messrs E. Ramsav, W. G. Hayward, and J. C. Lewis. Unanimously supporting the formation of a Sports Council in South Canterbury. the meeting agreed that the Centre would affiliate with the Council when it was formed. The object of the proposed council was explained by the secretary (Mr A. C. Rippin). Mr W. Sutherland: I think that the formation of such a council to assist and encourage sport is a splendid idea. Mr A. Ball: All will be well if the Government does not step in and take control. The secretary: There is no reason to fear that. If Sports Councils receive the support of all sports bodies they would be strong enough to prevent such a step should it be considered.
