GREAT FIRES STARTED
Raid On Essen
LONDON, January 10.
Many 40001 b bombs were dropped.on Essen, when the Ruhr was raided last night for the third night running. The weather was good for bombing, and the force, which included the famous Lancasters, was met by a hail of antiaircraft fire and such a brilliant display of searchlights that the whole area seemed a blaze of light. Great fires were started. Among other damage, a railway yards and a gasworks were demolished. Other bombers raided targets elsewhere in Germany. Seven machines were lost.
