ABSENTEEISM
Prosecutions In N.S.W.
(7.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 10 About SO Sydney men who absented themselves from work on New Year’s Day have been convicted and placed on a bond of £2O to obey the National Security (Holiday and Annual Leave) Regulations. These will remain in force for the duration of the war and six months afterwards. Any man breaking his bond must pay £2O or go to gaol for a fortnight. In passing sentence the Magistrate said he adopted this course since the imprisonment of men engaged in war work would only hamper the war effort while fines might penalise people other’ than the defendants. Hundreds more prosecutions for New Year’s Day absenteeism are still to be made It is also announced that 119 miners and one mine manager are to be prosecuted for coal stoppages during the week.
