BRITISH YOUTH
Pre-Service Training
LONDON. January 8.
Pre-service training to make youths fit for the Army is now being carried out in Britain with the object of assisting them to be hard and fit when the time arrives for them to join the Army. Each command has instituted holiday classes at which schoolboys will spend about nine days. They take the same courses as the enrolled soldiers and the pay is a nominal sum for living expenses.
The boys parade at daylight and continue physical work or lectures until dark. They carry out the same exercises as the men, but without ammunition. Great emphasis is laid on the inculcating of leadership. The classes are stated to be most popular and they will be continued during the school holidays throughout the war. Those boys attending will return to school and act as instructors during the terms.
