BUILDING PERMITS

Decrease In Timaru During Year

There was a considerable decrease in the number of building permits issued by the Timaru Borough Council during 1942, in comparison with normal years. The reason was the wartime restrictions and the shortage of building materials. Major building operations begun .in Timaru during the year consisted of additions at the Craighead Diocesan School, alterations to the Talbot Hospital for the South Canterbury Hospital Board, the erection of the new tuberculosis hospital in Otipua Road (also for the hopital board), and additions to the store at J. R. Bruce’s biscuit factory. Four State rental houses in Otipua Road north and the Macaroni factory were completed during the last 12 months. Only two permits for the erection of new dwellings (valued at £1600) were issued, while alterations and additions to dwellings, involving work costing £l4BB. accounted for 24 permits. No permits were issued for the erection of flats or the conversion of dwellings into flats. Under the classification of “other buildings,” including factories, business premises, and institutions, five permits were issued for new buildings, costing £9447. as well as 17 permits for additions and alterations (costing £10,069) to existing buildings. The total number of permits issued for constructional work of all types was 48. representing enterprises costing £22.604.
