NARROW ESCAPE
Apartment House
Gutted
Boarders Lose Belongings (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 3. With scarcely time to grab more than a few of their personal belongings, and wearing little more than wraps thrown over night attire, residents of an apartment house. No. 255 The Terrace. Wellington, known as Gloucester House, lost practically all their belongings in a fire which broke out about 4 o'clock this morning. Sweeping swiftly through the wooden building of 21 rooms, the fire gutted almost every room and caused appreciable damage to the rest of the main building. The only apartment to escape was that of a small annexe. No one was injured, though some residents are suffering from the shock of the experience and others are feeling the effects of the thick smoke which filled the house. For a while the firemen faced a dangerous situation, adjacent wooden buildings being threatened. One caught alight under the eaves, but the damage was not great.
