TRUE SERVICE

Christian Principles

Essential

Address By Chief Scout

“We are friends of the Boy Scouts and will always do anything we can to help the Scouts,” said his Excellency the GovernorGeneral and Chief Scout of the Dominion during his address at the camp at Raincliff yesterday morning. Sir Cyril and Lady Newall were keenly interested in an inspection of the camp.

Sir Cyril said that he was particularly interested in the Scout movement for the reason that the boys would soon be men, and would then have their part to play in the world. “If you are good Scouts and learn all that Scouting means, you will realise that it is not only for one’s self that one should live. Unless you learn the value of service for others, you will never be happy. If you grow up with your only aim in life being to get an easy job with high pay, then you will not find happiness. “True service means that you must do something for somebody other than yourself,” he continued. “You are citizens not only of the British Empire, but also of a very beautiful country. You are lucky, for that is a great privilege. You should be prepared to do something in return for such a privilege. The Scout code teaches you to be tidy and clean—you should apply that code to your own life.

"If New Zealand is going to be a happy country, we must have happy homes. You can do your part in making your own home happy by being helpful in your home, and by honouring your father and mother in word and deed. If we are to have a contented country and a contended society, then we must lead lives according to Christian principles. "I want you all to get on in life. You will have lots of difficulties, but if you are going to have happiness then you must realise that there is something beyond yourself. “I am a great believer in the Scout movement as I believe that every boy should be given every possible opportunity,” Sir Cyril concluded. “I want you to get on in life, but above all I want you to be happy, and I wish you all the best for 1943.”
