BOWLING SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT
Manning Wins Singles Title C. H. Manning, of the Timaru Club, won the singles title at the South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s annual tournament, which was concluded on the Timaru green. His opponent in the final was R. Keen, of the Meadowbank Club, Oamaru. Both players gave a fine display in the presence of a large gallery, which was not slow to express appreciation of the good form revealed. Before the final Keen met Devanney (Milton) in a semi-final and won 20-16. The final between Manning and Keen was a neck and neck struggle, the issue being decided on the best head. With seven heads played, Manning- led 6-3. and he maintained a slight advantage throughout. At the 14th he was four up, but Keen scored a single on the next, only to drop back to four down on the succeeding head. He picked up a useful two shots on the 19th, leaving him only two down, and on the 20th he was lying two shots when Manning wicked a wing bowl and rolled in for shot. This left Keen with three shots to get on the last head to tie. He was lying two and just failed with his last to gain the third, and Manning won 15-14. It was a game worthy of finalists, and the players were deservedly congratulated by the president of the Centre (Mr S. Gibb) when he presented the trophies. Mr Manning congratulated his opponent on his fine game and also praised the work of the president and the secretary (Mr Robert Wilson), who had been instrumental in making the fixture the success it was.
TIMARU CLUB The Timaru Bowling Club held a friendly pairs competition on Saturday’ afternoon, there being a full green. The prize for the winning skip was won ( by J. Barlow (Linwood). Among the leads R. Millar and N. Nelson, of the Timaru Club, tied, and in the play off Nelson won.
