BAY CARNIVAL

Weather Spoils Holiday

The crowds of visitors who thronged Caroline Bay on Thursday were again favoured with ideal weather. At least 1000 bathers took advantage of the warmth and calm sea. The “Crackajacks” Concert Party entertained large audiences, and in the evening crowds gathered to see out the Old Year. “Lucky Spot” items were a feature of the popular programme at the Bay Hall dance. Dull, overcast weather conditions were a disappointment to the numbers of country visitors to Timaru yesterday. Although a few hardy swimmers braved the elements, the tennis courts and amusement devices were more popular than the sands and surf. Although provision was made for the parking of a large number of cars, it was found that the parking area set aside was insufficient and it had to be extended. It is estimated that between 450 and 500 cars were on the Bay during the afternoon. Mesdames W. W. Best and E. C. Stowell were the judges of the children’s fancy dress parade on Thursday afternoon. The results were:—Daintiest frock: Coral Hawkins 1, Ngaire Wadsworth 2, Natalie Gordon 3, Diana Clarke (special). Most Original Costume: Marion Day 1, Monica Nolan 2, Ken Marshall 3, M.
