LAWN TENNIS ANNUAL NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT

Play At Maori Park

Semi-Finals Will Be Reached To-day

Play began at Maori Park yesterday in the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s annual New Year tournament. Excellent entries were received, there being a large number from Christchurch and the country districts in South Canterbury. A cold southerly wind blew for the greater part of the day and at times light rain fell, but the programme was not interrupted, all games being completed on time. The courts were in good order and some splendid contests were seen. Among the prominent players competing are Miss Heather Elsom (Canterbury women’s singles champion), who, with her sister, Miss S. Elsom, who is also a competitor, holds the championship women’s doubles title of Canterbury; Miss Thelma Poole (former New Zealand champion), and Miss M. Adam (South Canterbury junior champion); Peter Durning (former No. 1 player in South Canterbury), K. Lane, A. Elsom, J. Bushell and N. Taylor. Play will continue at 9 o’clock this morning and quarter-finals and semifinals in most events should be played this afternoon. The finals will be contested on Monday afternoon.
