LATE CABLE NEWS

SINKING OF BARHAM (Rec.- 1 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 30. A dramatic eye-witness account of the sinking of HM.S. Barham indicates that the 31.000-“ on battleship sank in 4 minutes 45 seconds from the time she was struck by a torpedo off Solium. Barham was accompanied by H.M.S. Valiant. The ships were steaming in line ahead when watchers on the Valiant heard a terrific explosion, followed a few seconds later by two more. A column of water and. smoke which spread out like a huge mushroom, shot skyward. The Valiant swung hard to port, and 15 seconds later saw a submarine break surface about 150 yards away. The Valiant turned but the submarine crash-dived. Valiant moved up on Barham’s beam when the big ship heeled over, her main mast striking the water with a resounding crash. Water poured in the funnels and clouds of smoke and steam rose skyward. When the smoke cleared, there was no sign of the ship.
