“STUPID RUMOUR”
Alleged Diversion Of Tankers In reply to the Rev. Clyde Carr. M.P., who wrote tn him relative to an allegation that oil tankers were recently diverted from New Zealand owing to lack of storage facilities here, the Hon. R. Semple state?: — “I have now had an opportunity of discussing this matter with the Minister of Supply. Mr Sullivan advises me that this stupid rumour has apparently gained considerable currency throughout the Dominion, as his attention was recently drawn- to a similar, story emanating from the Taranaki district. My colleague points out that it is hardly necessary for him to say that had the Dominion's storage capacity been so fully taxed there would have been no necessity for the recent drastic cut in the petrol allowances to motorists. "Mr Sullivan concludes with the request that I give you an assurance as to the falsity of this story, which it is considered reflects great discredit on the person or persons responsible for its invention.”
