Waltoru, who was turned out early in the spring, has been nominated for the Winton meeting next week. Ten of the 18 horses entered for the Midsummer Handicap (11 miles) are in the Craven Plate (7 furlongs) also. The hurdler Flagman, who is nominated for the Winton Steeplechase, is now owned by the Invercargill trainer R. Bromby. The first steeplechase of the year is to be run at Winton next weeic. His fourth in the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham was in line with his best form. The Wyndham Juvenile Stakes, for three-year-old pacers, has been advertised as 11 miles. The correct distance is 11 miles, and this year it is open to horses owned or trained anywhere.

Llandaff has dropped out of the limelight lately, and his track work is not being featured. He is in the sprint race at Ellerslie on Saturday, and if the going is good he has a fine chance. Dark Hazard, who has had four changes of gait in recent years, has been racing since he was a two-year-old. He has won £3421/10/-, the result of 13 wins, 8 seconds, and 5 thirds. Ellis apparently contemplates a trip to Southland next month. Symbol, Miss Jessica, Craiglea and Chop Suey are among the horses entered at Winton. There were 282 cars (including 49 taxis) at Trentham on Cup day. In normal times the tally would have approached 3000. On the second day 437 cars (19 taxis) were parked on the course or in its vicinity. More than 20 horses survived the forfeit for the Middle Park Plate, but it is quite obvious that a good many were left in by accident, and not more than half of the total are likely to start. Mahaina was not an acceptor for the Ashhurst Cup. Divisions have been arranged in the Novice Stakes, Komako Hack Handicap, the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup and the Siberia Hack Handicap. Gay Rosette, after winning the Summer Cup at Ellerslie, was left at the post in the Nathan Handicap. With 8.4, 71b more than she carried in the Summer Cup, she seems entitled to start favourite in the Takapuna Cup this week. , , . Beau Leon appears to be feeling the strain of recent racing, and with 10.0 he does not appeal in the Takapuna Cup. He stood up to the summer campaign better than many of Beau Pere’s stock are apt to do. Bill Scott, who captured a double at Cambridge last week, had started only once previously. The U Scott gelding is out of Sarella, who produced also Rama Direct, runner-up in one event to Bill Scott. The Australian and New Zealand record for seven furlongs (1.221) established by High Caste and Mildura in their dead-heat at Randwick on Monday supplanted that of Lough Neagh and Mohican, who separately registered 1.23. It is reported in Wellington that Gladynev is to have a spell in the South Island. Astually he is now in R. Wilson’s stable at Riccarton. Another Trentham horse, to come south is Beau Ciel. who will be trained by C. C. McCarthy. _ • Sir Beau was unlucky not to be returned a winner at Wellington. This high-class performer is now at a weight which would, in the ordinary course, cause his connections to turn to weight-for-age races, but the only one in the near future that appears to have a chance of being run is the N-u-th Island Challenge Stakes. It is reported that Kindergarten-is in preparation for this, which he won last year, and with Sir Beau's two wins this season he will have to give Kindergarten weight. , The number of horsemen who have won the New Zealand. Auckland and Wellington Cups is greater than is supposed. Among them have been R. Derrett, S. Lindsay, F. Davis, L. H. Hewitt. C. Jenkins, R. Reed, B. Deeley, J O’Shea, M. McCarten, C. Emerson. L J. Ellis and N. Vaughan. Hewitt and Reed won each race at least twice. Vaughan’s recent achievement was notable because he won the three in one season. B. Deeley captured the treble in one year, but not in one season, which commences on August 1. Derrett. like Vaughan, was successful in all three races over two miles. TARANAKI NOTES (P.A.)
