FISH FOR MAORIS
Ancient Tribal Interests GISBORNE, January 28. For centuries the fishing grounds of the Tawaparo Block, on Mahia Peninsula, have provided the Maoris with a large proportion of their food. The fishing reefs are known to the older natives, and are picked up by bearings from marks on the peninsula. The fear that this knowledge might die with the older Maoris was expressed last year. The members of the committee of the block suggested that the commissioner. Mr J. S. Jessop, should purchase a fishing boat to locate these numerous reefs and fishing grounds. The commissioner had a special boat built in Auckland, and it arrived at Waikokopu just before the new year, after which It was taken to the Tuahatu Pa. The boat, which was named Hikairo, after the tribal ancestor, has been in constant use by the Maoris, who are catchine: good supplies of fish. It has been proposed to specially treat some of this fish for the Maoris on service overseas.
