RICCARTON NOTES

ASHBURTON TRIALS

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 9.

The overhead conditions were ideal for the work at Rlccarton this morning. The inside of the trial grass track was slow, as a result of the previous day’s rain, but some useful gallops were registered by horses engaged at Ashburton. Rue and Stylist reeled off five furlongs in imin ssec, the last four in 51 3-ssec. This was the best performance of the mofning; They have no Immediate engagements but they are very well. As usual, the more favourable ground for time was up the back, where King’s Toast and Fleche d’Or did half a mile In 51 l-ssec, which Pleading equalled, but St. Cloud did much better, beating Skyrena in 50 2-ssec. Little Secret and Fur Coat went exceptionally well for novices, registering 50 3-ssec. In half-miles down the straight, the best was done by Enticing, who cleared out from Mr D. Spence’s filly in 51 3-ssec. Donnybrook Fair, who will have his first race in the Novice Stakes, shaded Wild Fox in 52 3-ssec. He is a promising half-brother to Wild Talk. Shikari did similar time alone. Merry March and Hughsotis took 55 3-ssec. Over five furlongs, Myraid and Good Scout did Imin 6 4-ssec. Bascule was a neck in front of Hunting Charm in Imin 7 3-ssec, the pair just failing to catch Calypso, who broke away with a big advantage. Scottish Dale took Imin 9 l-ssec, but was going easily. Palfrey and Iceland Spar were well matched in Imin 8 l-ssec.

Eulogist covered six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec, time which Don’t Forget equalled, as did Wagner and Military Maid, two late workers. Willow Wood outclassed Rebel Star in Imin 22 2-ssec. Monetary, brought home by Lunarla, did Imin 23 1-5, Good Health and Ferriby Imin 23 3-5, Lord Dundas and Crossmaglen Imin 23 4-ssec. Cymric and The Wrecker, who worked early, set the main for seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec. Lord Midas beat Greenbank narrowly in Imin 35 2-5. Blue Coat was much too good for Highland Dance in Imin 35 4-ssec. Scarteen and Ackemma kept together all the way to register Imin 36 3-ssec. Ann Mie took Imin 36 1-5, doing it well, as she was not ridden out. Sir Gundi and Stabilise went well when they did the last four of six furlongs in 53 l-ssec. These two are in great order. Gay Parade strode freely over a mile in Imin 48 4-ssec. Prudent Prince and Dictate were well matched in Imin 49 3-55 sec, while Knight Commander and Blue Abbey took Imin 50 2-ssec.

Roddy (I. Walther) and Great Flight (M. Billington) set out to school over four hurdles, but Roddy lost his rider at the second, Great Flight completing the round alone, jumping well. Roy Bun (E. J. Jennings) went better than Flame Queen (I. Walther) in a smart run over four hurdles.

Scarteen will race at Ashburton for Mrs J. Campbell, who has acquired a lease of the gelding. He should get some money soon, as he is very well.
