FIGHT TO SAVE SHIP
Captain’s Vain Struggle (Rec. 12.19 a.m.) RUGBY, July 29. A nine-hour fight by the crew of a torpedoed British merchantman to keep the vessel afloat was described by the captain. When the ship began to sink by the bows the captain tried to save her oy steaming full-speed astern but water flooded the stokehold and the plan had to be abandoned. A desttoyer came along and requested the captain to abandon ship but he refused. The destroyer returned later after hunting the U-boat and unsuccessfully attempted to tow th 6 merchantman but she was too low in the Water. The captain finally decided it Was impossible to save his ship and with three of the crew who refused to leave wlthoiit him, he was rowed to the destroyer and was eventually landed at his home port.
