SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs F. F. A. Ulrich, Elizabeth Street, has returned from a visit to Moeraki. Mrs Mary Raymond, Wal-iti Avenue, is staying at “Sundrum,” Woodbury. Mrs Guinness, “Galashiels,” Sefton Street, is staying with Miss LeCren, “Nga Punawai,” Fairlie. Mr and Mrs W. Rumbold, Greymouth, are staying with Mrs A. M. H. Shirtcliff, Hlghfleld. Mr and Mrs A. H. Harper, who are visiting Makikihi, will leave to-day for Dunedin. Mrs R. L. Wigley, Kitchener Square, has returned from the Mackenzie Country, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs C. C. Parker, Holbrook Station. Miss Mary Henning, who was staying with Mrs M. A. Raymond, “Clovelly,” Nelson Terrace, left yesterday for -Seddon. Miss Helen MacCormick, Auckland, after 15 months’ service as a corporal and radio operator in the W.A.A.F., declined an administrative commission, to return to the stage. She is now with a repertory company in Wales. A London correspondent writes that Mrs J. Budge (Taihape), who was formerly a member of the nursing staff of Pukeora Sanatorium, Waipukurau, has a nursing home in Hampshire and another at Kew. A delightful Queen Anne mansion, the house in Hampshire is set in the most attractive surroundings. One of her. patients is Mrs Edward Wilson, widow of the late Dr. Edward Wilson, who died with Scott in the Antarctic. Mrs Budge was formerly Miss Alice Stubbing. There was a large attendance of members at the meeting of the Business Girls’ Lyceum at the Y.W.C.A. Rooms on Monday night. Mrs M. A. Raymond spoke on behalf of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, pointing out the very real need for such service in the event of a national ' emergency, and the wide scope of such work and the variety of openings, Mr W. Vance, continuing his talks on the early history of South Canterbury, spoke on Mackenzie, the notorious sheep-stealer and discoverer of the Mackenzie Country. At the monthly meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild, Mrs McAlister presided. Three new members were welcomed. A. motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Rendall in the death of her son on active service. During the afternoon Mrs Mathieson contributed songs, the Glenitl Institute entertained with a mime and a competition was held which was won by Mrs Maney. Mrs Cumberbeach thanked the members for their enjoyable items. Floral posies made by the Gardening Circle were sold in aid of the fund for parcels for members’ sons or fathers overseas. The hostesses were Mesdames R. Morrison, Tubb, Copeland. Allen, Richardt, Neilson, Fraser and Petrie.
