POPULAR SCHOOLMASTER FAREWELLED

PRESENTATIONS MADE The active part played by Mr J. J. McGuigan in the community was referred to by various speakers at a farewell presentation held in the Geraldine Primary School on Monday evening. Mr McGuigan, who has been headmaster at the Geraldine School for the last five years, has been promoted to headmaster of the Te Aroha School. Mr McGuigan had been a good citizen, said the Mayor (Mr D. C. McKechnie), who presented Mr McGuigan with a travelling rug, Mrs McGuigan with a crystal vase and Miss Elaine McGuigan with a book. The parents had confidence in Mr McGuigan, the Mayor said, and he would also be missed by the children, all of whom he had made his friends. Miss M. Roberts expressed the best wishes of the Geraldine Women’s Golf Club to. Mrs McGuigan, and Mrs I. M. Bell (president of the Geraldine Women’s Institute) presented Mrs McGuigan with a bouquet. Other speakers who expressed good wishes on behalf of various organisations with which Mr and Mrs McGuigan had been connected were:— Dr. L. C. Mail (Geraldine District Golf Club), Mr W. H. Kirk (Geraldine School Committee), Mr A. K. Easterbrook (Geraldine Library Management Committee), Mr J. R. Hawcridge (Geraldine Players), Mr J. Acland (Accommodation Section of E.P.S.), Mr P. G. Withers (Geraldine Patriotic Committee), Mr D. C. Williamson (Teachers’ Institute), the Rev. W. R. Lapsley (Geraldine Ministers’ Association) and Messrs P. H. Davis, H. A. Robertson and F. W. Grayburn (parents of school children). In reply Mr McGuigan said the five years he had spent in Geraldine had been very happy, and both he and Mrs McGuigan would never forget the many fine friends they had made in the district. Social Afternoon Friends of Mrs McGuigan entertained her at the heme of Mrs W. Watson, when Mesdames A. K. Easterbrook and Watson were the hostesses. Mrs McGuigan was presented with a bouquet by Mrs Easterbrook and suitably replied to the good wishes expressed by Mesdames Easterbrook, Watson and D C. Williamson. During the afternoon items were contributed by Miss E. Sherratt and Mrs L. Hopkins. Competitions were won by Mesdames McGuigan and R. Burrell. APRIL RAINFALL The rainfall in April was 57 points compared with 3.97 ins i t Aoril, 1940. The heaviest fall last month was on the 13th, when 35 points were registered. The rainfall to date is 13.8 inches, compared with 9.24 inches for the same period last year. The Geraldine Horticultural Society advise that prize money may be collected at Miss Turner’s fruit mart on Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m.
