Heaviest Raid* Of War

(1 a.m.) LONDON, May 9. The R.A.F. offensive against Germany reached its highest level last night. Hamburg and Bremen bore the brunt of the attacks, which were the heaviest yet made. High explosive bombs caused great destruction, and huge fires were started in the industrial and shipping areas of both cities. The weather was good, and the bombers pressed home their attacks. Other bombers carried out subsidiary raids on Berlin, Emden and other towns. From all these destructive raids, 10 British bombers are missing. Other bombers of the Coastal Command, attacked the enemy base at St. Nazaire.
