WELFARE OF COLONIALS
New Officer Appointed
(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 8. The Colonial Secretary (Lord Lloyd) has appointed Mr J. L. Keith to the newly-credited post of Welfare Officer in the Colonial Office. Mr Keith will be concerned generally with the welfare in the United Kingdom of people from the colonies, protectorates and mandated territories, with which the Colonial Office is concerned. Of such people there are considerable numbers in many large towns. Some are permanently resident in this country. The number of temporary residents like students has recently been increased by the arrival of men for service in the armed forces or for employment as skilled workers in munition and other factories.
Mr Keith served in the Colonial Office in Northern Rhodesia for 18 years, and after assisting Lord Halley in preparation of an African survey joined the social Services Department of the Colonial Office in 1939.
