Women’s Tournament South Canterbury Championship The South Canterbury women’s open championship and handicap golf tournament, which will extend over three days, commenced on the Highfield links yesterday. Overnight rain followed by frost made the links heavy in the morning, but later the greens played splendidly. The weather during the day was perfect. Two medal rounds were played and from these the eight qualifiers for the championship and eight for the Highfield trophy were found. In the senior division Miss Jean Horwell, who has held the title on many occasions, returned the best cards. She returned a gross 78 in the morning, but did not do so well in the afternoon, her score being 84. She led the field with a total of 162, Miss 1. Morrow, of Ashburton, who finished second on the list returning 172. The senior medal in the morning went to Mrs J. C. Tempier, with a net 76, while the afternoon medal went to Miss E. McLeod, Temuka, who returned a net 71. In the junior section, Mrs E. Greenall and Mrs Condell tied in the morning with a net 76, Mrs Greenall winning on the count back. The best net afternoon score was returned by Mrs Coxhead, this being 70. The Kerr Cup for teams attracted six entries, the trophy going to Temuka with an aggregate of 340, two ahead of Waimate. The first two rounds of the championship and the Highfleld trophy will be played to-day. Results were:
