WINTRY CONDITIONS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. The conditions were unpleasant at Riccarton this morning. Heavy rain during the night made the tracks soft and there were more wintry showers while the galloping was in progress. AH the work was done on the No. 8 grass track, but there was not much interest in the proceedings, times being slow. ' The popular journey was six furlongs and the best effort of the morning was registered early when Trench Fight did Imln 19 l-ssec. Benevolent beat Prudent Prince in imin 20 2-ssec, time which King’s Toast equalled, going attractively. Rebel Star and Sham Boy, separately, took Imin 21sec, Don’t Forget Imin 21 2-ssec, Alias and Espionage Imin 21 3-ssec, Eulogist Imin 22sec. Retrogression and Rawhamai were on terms, well clear of Guilder, in Imin 22 l-ssec. Enticing was too good for Haughty Lad and Ryetown in Imin 22 2-ssec, time which The Wrecker equalled in the first gallop of the morning. Faulks, of Pembroke, and he will commence stud life in the spring in Central Otago. He was shipped to his new home this week. A well-bred horse, one of our best performers of recent years, he has much to commend him as a sire.

The two-year-old, Salutation, by Theio from Queen's Salute, has gone home to her owner’s farm in North Canterbury for a spell. Another of Mr H. D. Greenwood’s two-year-olds, Bascule, by Foxbridge from Rose Latour, was gelded this week and he also will have a spell for a few weeks before being prepared for next season. Wild Talk, who has done no racing this season, is again a member of H. and A. Cutts’s active team. Shortage of labour prevented her from resuming work earlier in the year. It she trains on she will be a useful performer again next season.

A couple of fresh two-year-olds have been put in work by H. and A. Cutts, and if all goes well they should be ready to start racing about August. Court Dress, by Nightmarch from Ball Dress, is a promising brother to Nlgnt Dress, while Donnybrook Fair is a classy looking young horse by Foxbridge from Babel, the dam of Wild Included in this week’s ballot were two Riccarton trainers, J. C. Tomkinson and R. Pentecost, and two jockeys, M. Caddy and H. W. Hibberd.
