LATE CABLE JEWS

CENSORSHIP OF CABLE MESSAGES (Rec. 2 am.) CANBERRA, May 8. An announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Senator Foil, to-night, that press cable messages to Australian newspapers will no longer be subjected to a censorship in Australia provided they have already been censored by the United Kingdom despatch station. Senator Poll pointed out that Mr Menzies had arranged for this departure which would be appreciated by newspaper staffs, who would be given the same power of voluntary censorship as they were exercising over Australian news. It was an extension of the “honour” system which would be applied to all incoming messages, both cable and wireless. Senator Foil emphasised that cable -elays would thus be reduced to a it inlmnrn, .but special articles from oversea correspondents would require to be carefully watched and maybe it would be necessary to seek the advice of local censors, the responsibility for which would rest upon editorial staffs.
