NEW LIFE FOR OLD FROCKS
New trimmings are useful in giving fresh life to old frocks and hats. A new collar, a set of new buttons, or a belt will often bring an old frock into line with the latest ideas in dress fashion. From time to time it is a good plan to go over what is in the wardrobe. There may be plenty of frocks and hats and other items beyond recall. Others may be renovated. First, sort the possibles from the impossibles and banish the latter ruthlessly. Hoarding unwanted things leaves less room in which to keep the useful ones in adequate fashion. Then divide the coloured ones from the white. Tennis frocks and other things that should be snowy may have acquired a creamy tinge. Soak them in water and hang them dripping wet in the suushine. When dry wash in usual way with a dip in specially strong blue water after they have been rinsed. Discreet Dyeing Some of the coloured frocks may be faded or of unfashionable shades These can be discreetly dyed, always remembering that if a different colour is wanted it must be one that is darker than the garment to be dyed.' Dyes will not take out spots, so see that the article is perfectly clean before you begin changing its colour. Clothes that looked fresh enough when they were packed away reveal a grubby, tumbled appearance very often when they are brought out again. Choose a fine day for dealing with those that are destined for the washtub. Some silks and cottons such as voile and rayon need washing and drying quickly or they will shrink. They should be dipped and squeezed in warm soapy lather, rinsed in water of the same temperature, and hung out in a good breeze. Frocks of delicate fabrics that are not very much soiled can be freshened by rubbing them over with powdered magnesia. Leave it on for 24 hours and then shake the garment and brush it with a clean soft brush. I'here is always someone with something to sell, and someone who want' to ouy—advertise.
