LABOUR DISPUTES

GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN’S REPORT Industrial disputes in New Zealand for the nine months ended September 30, 1940, totalled 43, compared with 55 for the same period of 1939, reports the Government Statistician. Further details, with the corresponding figures for last year were: Firms affected, 66 (624); workers involved 8638 (13,577); duration, 1313 days (381 days); working days lost, 19,667 <44,551); approximate loss in wages, £21,073 (£50,166). The industries mainly affected were shipping and cargo working, coal mining and meat freezing.
