TOLD IN STATISTICS While those statistical indicators pai - ticularly prone to seasonal influences show reduced figures as compared with the previous month, the Government Statistician regards. the series as a whole as presenting a favourable showing. Movement of goods normally at a low ebb in September shows a slight increase as compared with September. 1939. The volume of goods traffic handled on the railways fell very slightly. The Livestock Division of the Department of Agriculture reports that the prospects for the 1940-41 farm production season are particularly bright. “The very favourable conditions reported previously have continued throughout the past month. Good weather and excellent conditions for the promotion of growth of pastures and crops have been general throughout. The feed position is reported to be most satisfactory and all classes of stock are doing well. The conditions have been favourable for lambing, and high percentages are indicated.” Average weekly value of bank debts placed to individual customers accounts in September was £18,229,109 Normally value of cheque transactions reaches its lowest point in September, and invariably shows a substantial decline from the previous month’s average; but in 1940 there was actually an increase of 1.1 per cent. Bank advances continue downwards; demand deposits show an increase above September, 1939. Increased note circulation is reported. Savings bank deposits for September. 1940, were £294,413 in excess of September, 1939, and for the first nine months of this year the excess of deposits in savings banks over withdrawals is £2,096.273, compared with an excess of withdrawals over deposits for the 1939 period of £5,421,210.
