LAWN TENNIS VISITORS WIN

Southland Beat South Canterbury First Contest On Record A new page in the history of tennis in South Canterbury was written yesterday when for the first time a representative match was played against Southland. The visitors won by 14 matches to 10, and thoroughly deserved their success, particularly as a majority of them, were not accustomed to grass courts. The standard of play was good, and many of the matches were keenly contested. There was not a great deal to choose between the men. If anything South Canterbury were slightly stronger in this department, but the visiting women were too good, taking five of the singles and two of the doubles. Each side scored three wins in the mixed doubles. The most strenuously fought game in the men’s singles was between the No. 1 strings, P. Durning and A. Baird. Durning took the first set 6-3, but dropped the second. The South Canterbury player twice had match point in the third set, but lapsed. Baird fought back strongly and drew even with beautifully angled shots. It was not until the sixteenth game that Durning secured the deciding point. Lindsay scored a signal victory over W. E. Renton. The Southlander has only one arm, the left, but he played a brilliant game, and disposed of his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Mackay had an easy win over Coward, and McWhirter, after a close call in the first set, won comfortably against A. McKay. South Canterbury took two of the doubles, although Durning and Renton dropped the second set to Baird and Lindsay. McWhirter and Barclay put up a good fight against Adams and Coward, a double fault service by McWhirter giving the South landers the second set, and they took the third 6-2. Mrs N. Martin was the only South Canterbury woman to record a win in the singles, and even this match went to three sets. In the doubles, also, one match only was taken, Mesdames Renton and Martin defeating Misses Wilson and Barrett. A welcome was extended to the visitors by the president of the South Canterbury Association (Mr J. S. Satterthwaite), who expressed the pleasure of South Canterbury players at having the opportunity of meeting the Southlanders. He hoped the fixture, which had been a most pleasurable one, would become an annual event. The manager of the visiting team, Mr J. H. B. Scholefield, acknowledged the welcome and thanked the South Canterbury Association for its hospitality. The scores were:— Men’s Singles P. Durning beat A. Baird, 6-3, 3-6, 9-7. W. E.
