“ The Timaru Herald ” November 26, 1880 Comparative Wages Leading Article.—A paragraph has lately been the round of the papers drawing a comparison in the wages point of view between the labourer o: England and the labourer of this colony; and the balance is highly fav ourable to the latter. Assuming thx ordinary labourer—the man accustomed to pick, shovel, and spade worl —received six shillings per day, his lo ! would be princely compared with thai of the English agricultural hand. Th< latter has to work far longer hour: than his colonial brother; and h< would think he did marvellously wel if hq earned fifteen shillings weekly The English labourer has to live hard butchers’ meat is rarely seen on hi table, and anything in the shape o luxury is positively denied him. Tin colonial workman, on the other hand would think he was ill used if he die not get good mutton or beef threx times a day, and he is not beyonx Indulging himself in things not gener ally deemed necessary to existence. Ox thirty-six shillings a week he can livi right well, and save something into thi bargain, provided, of course, he is wise and prudent, and temperate. Large Trout The Lyttelton Times of yesterda; says that the largest trout that ha been caught this season was taken b: Mr Gwatkin last evening below th Madras street bridge. Masonic Hail, Waimate The laying of the foundation ston of the new hall of the St. Augustin Lodge, Waimate, No. 576, S.C., too place yesterday in the presence of large number of people. About 7 members of the Order, including 2 from the Kilwinning Lodge, Oamarx 5 from the Waitaki Lodge, and from the Timaru Lodge, marched lx procession to the ground, headed b the Waimate Brass Band. The cere mony was performed by PM. Bro. Me Neil, assisted by the R.W.M. of th Waimate Lodge, Bro. E. H. Gibbox Messrs Neilson and Millhouse official ing as Wardens. The building will b erected on a piece of land situate i: Leonard street, and will be of brick and one storey high. It will contaii a main hall 24 x 34. a lobby 8 x 10, an two committee rooms, 12 x 10. Th total cost will be about £4OO.
