SOCIAL NOTES Mr and Mrs C. Cliff, Wellington, are the guests of Mrs J. P. Cliff, Geraldine. Miss Violet Smith. Old North Road, is visiting relatives in North Canterbury. Miss Ethel Ford, "Foxdown,” South Canterbury, is staying with Mrs G. S. Roberts, Leithfleld. Mrs Gerald Murray, “Glenmore,” Mackenzie Country, has returned from a visit to her sister, Mrs J. Watson, Gore. Mrs Rex Harper, “Grassy Hills,” Kurow, is staying with her mother, Mrs P. C. Wright, St. Martin's, Christchurch. The friends of Miss Molly Orbell, “Pentlow,” who has been in hospital as a result of an accident while jumping at the Christchurch Agricultural and Pastoral Show, will be pleased to hear that she was able to return home on Saturday. Mrs J. Taylor presided over a good attendance of members of the South End Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society, at the final meeting of the year. The secretary presented a brief report of the Sub-Centre’s activities. Mrs Taylor thanked the members for their co-operation and assistance, especially at functions in aid of the Air Force Queen funds. Mrs Tweedy, the Mayoress, spoke briefly on the work of the Red Cross Society and thanked the members of the Sub-Centre for theii' work, and asked for the same loyal support in the coming year.

WEDDING BATCHELAR—PENNO At St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Waimate, the marriage took place of Florence Mary . (Billie), younger daughter of Mr E. Penno and the late Mrs Penno, Waimate, and Robert Cyril, only son of Mrs Batchelar and the late Mr H. Batchelar, Marton. The Rev. Kent officiated at the ceremony and Mrs M. Hayman presided at the organ. The bride who was escorted by her father, wore a frock of magnolia brocaded satin, cut on slim-fitting lines. The long sleeved bodice was ruched in front and on the shoulders. The skirt fell into a long train. Her embroidered tulle veil fell from a halo of orange blossom. She carried a bouquet of cream roses, sweeet peas and maidenhair fern. Miss Jean Langley, the bridesmaid, wore a frock of rose-pink satin cut on similar lines to the bride’s and finished with tiny bows at the back. Her halo was composed of rose-pink flowers and she carried a bouquet of pink roses and maidenhair fern. The flower girl, Sylvia Hartmont, wore a powder blue taffeta frock, trimmed with rows of tiny frills, with a halo to match, and carried a posy of roses and forget-me-nots. Mr P. A. Young, Dunedin, was best man. At the reception the guests were received by Mrs Penno, who was attired in a floral frock with navy edge to edge coat and navy straw hat. She wore a shoulder spray of red roses. Mrs Batchelar (mother of the bridegroom) wore a multicoloured frock in brown tonings, brown silk coat and hat to match. Her shoulder spray was composed of orange flowers. For travelling the bride wore a wine coat and floral frock, and small black hat. Mr and Mrs R. C. Batchelar’s future home will be at Palmerston Nor th.
