“SHIFT WORK”
APPEAL ALLOWED By Telegraph —Press Association DUNEDIN, November 22. Mr Justice Kennedy heard an appeal from a Magistrate’s judgment in a case in which James John Grant, a carder, was appellant and Messrs Ross and Glendinning respondents. The Magistrate dismissed Grant’s claim. The appeal involved the definition of the term “shift work” in the woollen mills labour legislation suspension order, 1940. It was a test case to determine the right to shift pay by 300 employees at the Roslyn Mills, also 1 by woollen mill workers in other parts | of New Zealand. The facts were that Grant was paid ; wages at the award rate but, in addition, claimed in respect to the period ' from June 20 to July 16 the sum of £2 i 17s, at the rate of 3s a shift. He had j worked by day only, doing regular i hours of work. The\ Judge held that appellant was I working on shift work within the ! meaning of the order, and was there- ; fore entitled to 3s a shift extra.
