He said he was one of the survivors of the steamer City of Benares, which was torpedoed last month. He said that within eight hours, 24 out of the 28 persons In his lifeboat died from exposure. He said "I was playing whist at 10 p.m. when an explosion occurred. We went overboard into a lifeboat in heavy seas which almost flooded the lifeboat in which I held as many shivering children as possible. They died before my eyes. I took the lifebelts off each and cast the bodies into the sea after saying a prayer. Only four remained when a destroyer hauled us aboard by a rope.”
