WAIMATE DOMESTIC HELP

Suggested Use For Holidays Assisting Production “On farms domestic help is scarce and unobtainable,” said the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) at the meeting of the Waimate Borough Council on Tuesday night. ‘‘Production is limited to the share of the burden of provisioning and so on which can be carried by The domestic side of the home unit. One woman has offered that during her holidays she will go out to a farm and give her aid as one of the family. That has opened up the idea that in this way women might be willing to use holiday periods in such recreational assistance to primary production as is to be found in a change of air and scene and companionship and helpfulness.” Mr Dash went on to say that arrangements had been made for a list to be compiled at the office of the secretary of the Waimate branch of the Farmers’ Union (Mr A. J. Hoskins). The list would contain the names both of those wanting help and those willing to help. Mr Hoskins would act as go-between in submitting the list to those interested, so that satisfactory selections could be made. Pay would be a matter of mutual arrangement. General Business “The footpaths are more used than the roads,” the Mayor remarked when commenting on a report from the Traffic Inspector (Mr J. Scott) which particulary mentioned cycling on footpaths. The inspector is to be given authority to prosecute for such i offences in the Borough. The chairman of the library committee (Or. S. I. Fitch) said that the travelling country service librarian had spoken very highy of the Waimate library and had said that it was the best on his round. The report of the librarian (Miss L. Morrison) stated that there were 553 subscribers and 2958 books had been I issued during the month. I A letter was received from the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association stating that the branch could better assist the Home Guard if : it had two representatives on the ' Waimate Committee. The Mayor stated that the Waimate Committee would consist of three representatives from the Borough Council, three from the County Council and one each from the Farmers’ Union, the Trades Council and the Returned Soldiers’ Association. It was essential that the local bodies should retain a preponderance of voting power, as they would be responsible for finance. It was decided that any member unable to attend a meeting of the Home Guard Committee could send a substitute. The Mayor, town clerk (Mr i B. S. Runciman) and Cr Fitch were appointed to represent the Council. In connection with an application from the Waimate Golf Club for an extraordinary connection to the water supply to provide for stock grazing on the links, Cr G. R. Watters asked if the Council w’as going to keep on granting extraordinary connections. He opposed the application. The town clerk said that because of the pressure, the golf links would not obtain any water during the day. The sum of £2 a year would have to be paid for a trough, and the Council could terminate the supply at three months’ notice. The application was granted. Mr H. Willetts was appointed caretaker of the baths, and it was decided to adjust the hours during which the baths are open. A donation Of £1 was made to the South Canterbury Health Camp Association. A list of suggested improvements to the Arcadia Theatre was received from the management, and it was decided to adopt them subject to the approval of the health inspector. The Knox Presbyterian Church managers wrote declining the , Council’s offer to maintain the flower beds in the Church grounds for £lO a year. The general committee reported that applications had been called for the position of assistant town clerk, and it had been decided to promote the present junior, Miss Hassall, and raise her salary by £2B/12/- a year accordingly. Miss N. Brien had been appointed office junior. AMATEUR ATHLETICS ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the Waimate Amateur Athletic Club it was decided if possible, to open the season with a visit from Timaru athletes. Four miniature cups are to be presented for the meeting on a points basis. The suspension of the club’s activities was considered, but it was decided to hold a sports meeting to discover what support was forthcoming before making a decision. It was stated that a number of athletes, mostly juniors, were in training, and perhaps their support would be sufficient to justify a continuance of the club’s activities. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £B/4/3. It was stated that the Mitchel Cup for the best all round athlete which had been held for a number of years by J. Anstey, had been won by A. Guy. Miss J. Mcßae obtained most points in the women’s section. Placings for most points during the season were: A. Guy 17, J. Frost 9, E. W. Harris 8, G. Wright 7, I. Kennett and D. Campbell 6. W. Murphy 5, H.
