DAMAGE CONFIRMED
Italian Battleships Crippled United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, November 19. Commenting on Mussolini’s assertion that three Italian battleships were damaged, but not sunk, it is officially .stated that a reconnaissance confirmed that three crippled battleships were partially under water. The water at Taranto is too shallow to entirely submerge a battleship unless it lay on its side. It would be impossible to undertake large repairs such as would be necessary for at least one battleship at Taranto, unless workers were drafted there, otherwise it would be necessary to tow the ships to private yards, entailing grave risks, as it would probably be necessary to go to Trieste.
