Four explosive bombs caused damage to residential property in the 283rd raid on a southern area. Bombs damaged a number of dwelling houses at a few points in the London area and several Channel towns last night. The casualties were not heavy, but some persons were killed. Fourteen German aircraft were destroyed during attacks on Britain yesterday afternoon. Five British fighters were lost, but the pilots of four are safe. Birmingham has decided not to build further big shelters but to concentrate on small surface shelters and strengthened basements holding only a few families.
