DISPLAY OF TOYS

MAIN SCHOOL PUPILS An attractive array of toys made by Main School pupils is at present on display at the Timaru Juvenile Librarv where it is a striking demonstration of the value of the library in encouraging an interest in craft work among young children by the loan of numerous magazines dealing with toy making, fretwork, etc. The exhibit is surmounted by a splendid model of Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind, proudly flying St. George’s Cross and the lions of England standard. Fully rigged and with a complete battery of guns gleaming from the gunports, the model must have taken many hours of patient labour The toys were made by both girls and boys and each class is represented. Teddy bears, golliwogs, elephants, dogs, rabbits, dolls and dolls’ furniture delight the girls, and realistic brightly coloured wheeled toys, including elephants. cows, horses, lorries, wheelbarrows and the popular childrens "dobbins” make an instant appeal to the small boys. Jig-saw puzzles illustrate the ability with which both boys and girls operate a fretwork saw The display is part of a large collection of toys which has been made at the Main School and reflects much credit on the pupils and their teachers. The toys will be offered for sale on parents’ day at the school. Many of the patterns were obtained by the toymakers from books and magazines, such as “Arts and Crafts Education," “Simple Handcrafts ” ‘TOO Things a Girl Can Make” and "Foulsham’s Book of Fretwork,” with which the Juvenile Library is well stocked.
