RICCARTON NOTES

SMART SPRINT (Special to “The Timaru Herald.’) CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. The weather was fine, though very cold, while the work was in progress at Riccarton this morning. The No. 6 grass track was in good order, but though there were plenty of horses on the scene, there was not much excitement in the proceedings. There will be more interest in Tuesday’s gallops, as the trainers will then have the weights for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. D. Cotton made special arrangements for Density to gallop on the course proper and she was sprinted down the straight five furlong track. Timed from the jump off. she registered Imin 3sec. It was a useful effort, as she started behind the barrier post and went from a stand. She is not wound up yet but she looks well and she will not need many sprints to bring her to her best form. The three-year-old Haughty Lad, has been sold by the Trustees of the late Sir Charles Clifford’s estate. His new owner is a patron of G. A. Withers’s stable, where the colt is quartered. He will be gelded this V’eek and he will resume work after a short spell. Though small, he is a shapely young horse. He has had a couple of races, without showing any form, but he has done well enough in his track gallops to suggest that he will pay his way later in the season. A good deal of interest centred round Shikari in the October Handicap at Dunedin, but Lord Puck and Sir Hugn were both preferred to the Guineas candidate. Shikari was caught on the wrong foot at the start, and with Hanlon, was slow away. Lord Puck. Araboa and Strip jumped out smarriv and at the six furlongs Strip and Iz)rd Puck were racing clear of Night Pal. Araboa and Sir Hugh. Strip and Lord Puck led round the top from Night Pal, Araboa, Sir Hugh and Petersham, but Araboa retired at the approach to the straight. Strin. liord Puck. Night Pal, Sir Hugh and Petersham were first into the home stretch, where Night Pal galloped to the front to win by three lengths from Petersham, who beat Strin on the post for second money. Lord Puck and Shikari were three lengths further back. There was a close contest for favouritism between Passaform 637-654, Winning Rival Gl2-639 and The Raker 572-631 for the Churchill Handicap at Dunedin, but only The Raker made anv real show. Capricious was first to jump but at the end of a furlong Straightdell. Swordstick, Capricious and Glenora Boy was the call, the last two being Winning Rival and Passaform. At th? mile Straightdell was bowling along clear of Glenora Boy and Swordstick, with Capricious heading the rest. Across the top the order was Straightdell. Glenora Bov. The Raker, Swordstick. Winning Rival, but as mon as they straightened for home Th? Raker ran up alongside Straightdell, and a furlong from the judge The Raker looked like coming a wav. Straightdell, however, fought on again, iri The Raker won bv onlv a neck. Sv/o-dstick who dropped ba?k across the and Settlement both finished strongly, going across the line together a length behind Straightdell. Glenora Bov ws fifth. .... Tire Air Force Handicao at Wingatui atracted the best field seen in a sorint race at Dunedin for a long time Tire three-vear-olds Doria 639-575 and Don’t Forget 649-527 disputed favouritism, with Rebel Mate 344-465 and Lord Nuffield 312-397 next in demand Phalanx was primarily responsible for a hold-un at the barrier. Nightealm and Don’t Forget were first to show, and at the far turn Don’t Forge: was leading from Lord Nuffield, Boswell. Rebel Mate, Spanish Lad and Doria. Across the top th? order was Don’t Forget. Lord Nuffield. Rebel Mate, Snanish Lad, Doria and Silver Streak, and it was much the same into the straight. A furlong from the judge Doria dashed to the front, and she won easily by two lengths from Don’t Forget, who was just over a length ahead of a row which comorised Lord Nuffield, Silver Streak, Rebel Mate, Gold Flight and Boswell. Spanish Lad was one of the last away, and Rebel Mate who was soon in a handy pasition, left the rails and finished wide out.

Caulfield Guineas Gold Salute Has Another Success United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 13, 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 13. ' The weather was warm and there was a large attendance at Flemington on Saturday for the opening day of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club’s spring meeting. Lucrative led practically all the way to register one of the easiest wins in the history of the Caulfield Guineas, from his co-pacemaker Warbird, and the fast finishing Velocity. The latter pair are both trained by S. Ferguson. Lucrative's win proved that the colt was unlucky at the Randwick races. Pandect finished well but Tidal Wave was never dangerous. M. McCarten, rider of Lucrative, won the Caulfield Guineas previously on Ajax, Young Idea and Ammon Ra. Lucrative’s time, 1.37, equals Ajax’s race record. Gold Salute, who was well placed early, lost his position at the turn but came again for an attractive win in the Toorak Handicap. He has 8.2 in the Caulfield Cup. His time, 1.355, is a race record. Results: — lOLA WELTER, Of £500; 9 furlongs Panka, 6.4 (A. Dewhurst)l Sir Romeo, 9.10 (Olsen)2 Alarm, 8.11 (W. Elliott)3 , Twenty-one started. Won by half a head, a head between second and third. Panka is not running in the Caulfield Cup and Gold Salute is a doubtful starter in same race. M. McCarten said Lucrative was better now than at any stage of his career. He expects the colt to reverse positions with Pandect in the Victoria Derby. High Caste and Beaulivre have arrived. They travelled well.
