LONG CHESS CONTEST

A chess contest which lasted for twenty years has been brought to an end by the death of Mrs Annie Paton, of Rhyl, in North Wales. She was ninety-three. Since 1920 Mrs Paton had corresponded weekly with her 50-year-old nephew, Hugh Paton Harrison, of Hartlepool. And their boards have shown one move a week, year in, year out. The matches were always hotly contested; but Mrs Paton invariably won in the end. “So I should,” she used to remark. “I’ve been playing chess forty years longer than Hugh has.”
